Chapter 18
With the official reason for our meeting concluded, Power Piston and I had our first meal together (and first real talk) in years. We used the time to reminisce and catch up – mostly the latter, to be honest, with him telling me how things had been going for him with the Alpha League.
I didn’t really care much to talk about what I’d been up to over the past few years, so I had no issue with letting him dominate the conversation. From what I could glean, being in the League was everything he had dreamed it would be, and more. The possibility of joining a superhero team was something we had discussed often back when we were partners, and – although it hadn’t happened for me – I was sincerely happy for my friend. He was a guy who had truly deserved it, and I was glad he hadn’t passed on the opportunity out of misguided loyalty to me.
Lunch, unfortunately, turned out to be shorter than either of us would have liked; my old partner had pressing business to attend to (of the caped variety) and had to leave. In fact, he wasn’t even going to be present when I met with the League (which may have been intentional), but he assured me that I could rely on the terms he’d laid out.
Then, after a fraternal hug and a promise to get together again soon, we parted ways.
*****
I showed up at Alpha League Headquarters shortly before seven o’clock that evening, which was the time I’d given Power Piston for the meeting. To be frank, I could have made it earlier, but I wasn’t interested in doing the League any favors at the moment. There was a possibility that time was a critical factor, but I didn’t think a few hours either way would upset the applecart too much.
After announcing myself, I was hustled by uniformed guards through several security checkpoints – which included various types of scanners – to make sure I wasn’t carrying any weapons. Needless to say, I did have a few items of note on my person, but they were (as usual) in the secret pockets of my jacket. Moreover, the alloy from which my jacket was made had unique properties so that it didn’t set off metal detectors.
In short, I wasn’t at all worried about the scanners picking up anything. I would only have an issue if the League’s security protocols included a pat-down, but apparently that was too old-school. Why frisk a guy when the metal detectors just confirmed that he didn’t have anything on him?
They did, however, confiscate my tablet, which I had brought with me. (Apparently a missive had gone out about my earlier ruse, so they’d decided to nip that in the bud this time.) I asked one of the guards if I could get a receipt for its return. He looked at me as if I’d just asked if I could slap his mother. My question, it seemed, implied that the Alpha League – the world’s greatest superhero team – would stoop to larceny.
